11 Ways to Make Small Bathrooms Look Bigger

We moved to the big cities for a better life. No doubt our packages increased but our homes got smaller and bathrooms even more tiny. It is not easy to remodel or change the entire layout of the bathroom especially if you are living in a multi-flat apartment complex. There are architectural issues in the layout of the building that can’t be altered. Matters become even more complex if you are renting the apartment. With the help of professionally qualified interior designers, you can make the space look bigger. Discover innovative small bathroom design ideas to maximize space and style. From clever storage solutions to chic fixtures, create a functional and beautiful oasis in even the tiniest spaces. You can’t increase the allocated space, but you can create an illusion of a bigger area without compromising the functional aspect of the bathroom.

Our expert interior designer at Elevation Interior, Thane, Ms. Nazish (B.F.A) generously let us in on a few of her design secrets to make a small bathroom look bigger. Here is what she has to say:

Scale and Clearance

First and foremost, understand the scale and clearance of the bathroom. You need at least 36 inches of space for the toilet. This means that when you are sitting on the toilet, there should be 18 inches of space on both your sides. This step is the basis where you start designing your toilet. Every other aspect of interior design revolves around it.

Type of Sink and Vanity

Though we are big fans of vanity and it helps keep the essentials organized, when it comes to small bathrooms, having a big vanity is out of the question. You have to make the most of the space that is left after installing the toilet seat and make the bathroom look bigger. We suggest going for pedestal sinks or floating sinks to provide more visibility. Getting a pedestal sink would no doubt decrease the countertop space but it will create an illusion of a bigger space. This makes it easier to clean the bathroom and not make it look cluttered. The size and shape of the sink would depend upon the leftover space. If you have a rectangular ally-like space left, don’t go for a round sink. Get a long sink. Add shelves to the wall to increase the storage space.

Faucets

When there is a space crunch, we have to make sure that we make every inch count. Wall-mounted faucets instead of countertop faucets are something you should go for. First, they save space. Second, they look happening and last but not least they don’t give the impression that you are trying to save space. Rather, they give an impression of a well-designed and decorated bathroom.

Mirror, mirror on the wall

When you don’t have much space on the floor make the most of it on the wall. Install big mirrors. You can even get customized mirrors for the exact size you want. Large mirrors create an effect of elongation and make the area look bigger. There are so many designs to choose from. Take the help of our experts at Elevation Interior, Thane and pick the one that would go with the entire look of your house and not just with the bathroom. Lighting & Ventilation

We can’t stress enough on the importance of proper lighting. Make sure there is proper natural and artificial lighting. As the bathroom area is small, you don’t want very bright overbearing lights. Also, remember, layered lighting is not meant exclusively for living or dining rooms. Frosted light strips around the mirror or recessed ceiling lights go very well in small bathrooms. Complete the look by adding scones on both sides of the mirror.

If you are lucky to have a window in your bathroom, your problem is sorted. Having a window adds to the element of open space making it airy and less claustrophobic. Don’t forget to cover the window with non-transparent window shields though.

What shade to pick?

Darker colours have a tendency to make the room look smaller. If your space is already small, go for a lighter or neutral shade. By choosing a lighter shade we don’t mean that the bathroom should not have a cohesive look with the rest of the house. It should not look like a separate entity. Take the help of some of the best interior designers in Mumbai at Elevation Interior, for a better understanding of the colour palette that would not only add to the look of the bathroom but also be in sync with the rest of the house.

Wall Décor

If you have a big bathroom, wall décor adds to the elegance of the bathroom. However, in the case of a very small bathroom, overdoing the wall décor would make it look cluttered and tacky. And we are sure, this is not the look we are going for. Thin out on the decorations, when it comes to small bathrooms. A small picture frame is okay, but not a huge painting.

 Material

Don’t bounce between the material. Choose and stick to it. For example, if you want to go for ceramic, fine, go for it. Don’t make the shower tiles in ceramic and shift to mosaic for the rest of the space. The aim here is to bring cohesiveness to the space and not make it look super busy and chaotic. Also, larger tiles make the space look bigger.

Flooring

Since the space is already small, it makes sense to go for continuous flooring rather than sectioning everything. For example, don’t install a curb around the shower area. Also, avoid different flooring materials. Having separate materials for the shower, wall or toilet area creates visual hindrance. The floor should be seamless. Try adding an infinity-edge shower drain for a smooth-looking surface.

Shower-cum-bathtub

For a big bathroom, go for a separate area for a shower and bathtub. If you are really keen on having a bathtub, install shower-cum-bathtub to save space. This way you can enjoy a long relaxing bath and a quick shower as per your choice.

Wall tiles/Panels

Rather than having a horizontal pattern for the wall tiles, opt for vertical designs. This would make the ceiling height look taller. Have a coloured ceiling to enhance the effect of the patterned tiles. There are many other choices like hexagonal tiles or rectangular tiles. Get creative, and design a pattern. Let our design team at Elevation Interior, Thane help you design a pattern that would be the best suited for your requirement.
