A Beginner’s Guide to Layered Lighting

Have you ever felt bored with your usual lighting? Or felt that your house or commercial space is too dull and needs an upgrade? If so, it’s time to invest in layered lighting. You must be wondering, now what is this? Let us explain it in very simple words:

Layered lighting is a way to use different types or sources of lighting to create a well-lit space. Layered lighting is a great way to create a beautiful and congenial interior space. It involves creating multiple layers of light, both natural and artificial, in order to create an inviting atmosphere. Not only does layered lighting provide visual appeal, but it also serves an important purpose by providing the necessary illumination for safety and functionality. Lighting plays an important role in creating a positive atmosphere. It reduces the strain on your eyes and creates a feeling of positivity in any room. Layered lighting is the perfect way to upgrade your interiors and bring life into dull spaces. With layered lighting, you can combine different types of illumination to create a unique atmosphere that reflects your personality.

In our previous blog, we talked about the types of lighting viz. ambient lighting for general overall lighting, task lighting for particular tasks like reading and accent lighting for mood lighting. Layered lighting is all about blending different light sources to accentuate different elements and create a contrast of colour and texture of the space.

We have jotted down some points to get you started and give you a bird’s eye view of what goes into making a space illuminated with layered lighting.

General Or Uniform Lighting level

Ambient lighting is used for this purpose. This is the base layer of any room. The purpose is to give overall lighting to the room to make it convenient for you to move freely and carry out your day-to-day activities. Being the first layer of lighting in any type of space, this sets the tone of the room. The ambient lighting is generally soft and diffused. Ceiling-mounted lights and recessed lights, which direct light downwards are commonly used to create a uniform lighting level. LED strip lights, chandeliers and pendant lights are also used for uniform lighting.

Break-up Large Rooms

Breaking up larger rooms into smaller lighting units provides more layers of lighting. To bring cohesiveness to the design use the same colour palette across the whole space. Try to be consistent with the colour temperature. The lighting needs to be all over the space and not just concentrated in one place. For example, to glorify an island kitchen you can have pendant lights over it or even a dimmable LED chandelier. Use a combination of high-output downlights over the workspace and then fill it with smaller infills to complete the lighting of the room.

Layered Lighting

Task and accent lighting

Once you have completed the general or overall lighting of the space. The next on the list should be a task and accent lighting. They are as important as the general lighting of your house and should not be ignored. Create a pool of lights. While choosing the right task light, ask yourself, what is the space for? Whether it is a work desk or a dressing table or a kitchen area. The choice of lighting is going to depend upon that. The same goes for accent lighting, the question is what area or what particular object are you trying to highlight? Is it wall art or a floor sculpture? How big is the area where you want a task or accent light?

Task and accent light not only adds depth to your space but also gives that ‘extra something’ to the overall appearance of the space. Use Dimmers

Dimmers have been around for some time now, but have recently begun to capture the attention of Indian buyers. There are wall dimmers for ceiling lights, wall lights and chandeliers and cord line dimmers for table lamps and side lamps. You don’t need the same intensity of light at all times during the day. With the help of dimmers, you can adjust it as per your requirement. Your eyes need to be relaxed and not strained.  Luckily, we live in a time where we can adjust not only the brightness but also the temperature of the light with a simple click on an app on our smartphones or a remote. Smart bulbs are what we are looking forward to in the coming time. It is very easy to modify the colour and temperature of smart bulbs in case you need a change.

Correct Colour Temperature

The colour spectrum that you choose can make or break the lighting of the room. Colour spectrum has a huge range and depends upon the size, structure, architecture and purpose of lighting. It goes from warm to cold lighting. There are four major categories warm light, soft light, bright light and daylight. Warm lights are more suited for bedrooms, living rooms and dining rooms as they create a cozy environment.

The yellowish-white light emitted by soft light bulbs, on the other hand, are more suited to kitchens and bathrooms. Bright light bulbs emit a colour that is somewhere between white and blue and is more suited for offices. A common misconception about daylight in the colour spectrum is that it will give a warmer tone but in reality, it is quite the opposite. The blue-tone light of daylight gives it a colder vibe. They are often seen in offices or hospitals as they are very bright and create a colour contrast to keep us alert.

Layered Lighting

When working on the lighting of a space, it is important to keep in mind all these features and use different types of lighting at various places and different heights so that the light is evenly distributed across the space.
