Studio Apartments: Do’s and Don’ts

Some of the best years of our life are those that we spent in a college hostel or as a Paying Guest. Those late-night study sessions, impromptu dance parties and the aroma of ‘Maggi’ at 2.30 in the morning. Nothing can beat those days. But at the same time, do you also remember the hostel warden breathing down your neck to maintain discipline or your ‘PG wali Aunty’ screaming ‘After 9 pm mess is closed’. How one wished to afford an apartment of his own at that time.

Late-night office shifts, affordability, need for independence and privacy have led to the popularity of studio apartments. Studio apartments are immensely popular amongst bachelors who spend most of their day outside working or studying but want to come home to a cozy and comfortable environment that they can call their home. As the space is small, designing a studio apartment is a tricky business. You need all the basic amenities, along with your personal style and functionality. This small room has to function as your bedroom, kitchen, living room, dining room and workspace at the same time. All of it is a little overwhelming.Luckily, Elevation Interior’s professionally qualified team specializes in converting a small space into a home. The good news is that there are plenty of different options for studio apartments. Here are some design tips to help you create a space that is both beautiful and functional.

Sense of Balance

Your apartment needs a sense of balance. Creating different sections in the room is a wonderful idea. You can have a dedicated area for different activities. Your bed should be used as a bed and not as a dining area. Set up a workspace at one end of the room and living space at the other. If the space permits you can use dividers to separate the areas. If the space is too small, avoid putting the dividers as it will make the room look even smaller. Also, in case you do decide to put dividers, don’t put dividers for every activity. For example, you may have a bedroom and workstation at one end and separate them with one divider from the living and dining room. Don’t go putting four dividers for each section. This will make the space claustrophobic.

Space Saving Furniture

Use space-saving furniture. Many a time we see that the space is too small to accommodate everything from the dining table to a workstation. To make the most of it, you can use multi-purpose furniture. For example, you can use nesting tables or folding chairs that can double up as your dining table and center table. Extendable center tables that can work as a dining table, as well as work station, are also a good option. Wall-mounted tables get a big thumbs up for saving space in studio space. Pull out sofa-sets with storage space are a win-win in this scenario. We do get the point not everyone is comfortable sleeping on their sofa. Wall Colors

Try unified colors when opting for a studio apartment. Too many colors make the room size look smaller. Everyone likes an accent wall. But for a studio apartment, we do recommend going for a single color or wallpaper. This doesn’t mean that you have to run away from patterns. You can very well get patterned wallpapers. The idea here is to make the room cohesive. If you are going for patterned wallpaper, go for a single wallpaper.

Accessories

Too many accessories will make the space look cluttered while too less will make it look empty. Maintaining the balance is the key. Also, avoid having accessories that are too big for the place. Like you can opt for a three-burner hob rather than a five-burner hob. Studio apartments need constant decluttering. You don’t really have the option to gather everything and put it in a storage room, because there is none. You have limited storage and you have to utilize it efficiently. Buy accent accessories that will create the illusion of a bigger room. For example, use large mirrors and place them in a way that light will bounce on them to make the space look bigger.

Scale and Proportion

Before buying any furniture, always measure the size of the room. Study the layout. Decide where you want to place a particular piece of furniture. Having a sketch is a better idea than having it in your head. Don’t shy away from trying our different styles of layout, before finalizing a particular one. Also, while buying the furniture, make sure your furniture is versatile enough for you to change its layout whenever desired. Measuring size and proportion is a requirement not only for studio apartments but for any space you are planning on designing, may it be your home or office space. Design as per Requirement

Design your apartment as per your requirement and not because you saw it in a catalog or in your friend’s apartment. Think about it. If you spend most of your time in the office and don’t work much from home, do you really require a workstation? If you are not a cooking enthusiast, do you really need a cooking range or a small microwave can suffice the purpose? The more you go adding, the more it is going to be difficult for you to handle. Sit, relax and jot down what you really want and buy as per your requirement. This will not just make your apartment more functional but also save you a ton of money.
